Stereotypical Outfits, Hair & Make-up Used In Pop Music Videos.

Previously in my pop genre conventions post, I briefly commented on the types of clothes and styles which are portrayed by pop artists and the music videos they create. But I thought it would be worthwhile to go in more depth of specific, outfits, hairstyles and make up ideas, which the audience expect to see. Also by creating this post, it gives us ideas of the styles which we can incorporate into our own music video.

  • Bright, fun looking clothing is normally used, as the whole sense of a pop music video is to generate fun,  and a wild side to the audience to follow suit with the song. This choice of outfitting is also used, as teenagers normally star in the music video or it’s targeted to them, therefore the audience will like the clothes and most likely be a choice of clothing they would wear or want to wear.
  •  The choice of clothes and hairstyles used specifically in the music video, will be hot on trend and still in fashion, therefore it could inspire the audiences clothes choices, or they will feel a connection if there style is similar.
  • In some cases depending on the artist or the song, women presented in the music video will wear revealing clothes, to appear more feminine and sexy. This approach will also gain the attraction of males wanting to watch the video as they like the way the female is dressed; then again on the other hand women may aspire to look and dress this certain way.
  •  Make-up normally worn by girls in the music video, tends to have some kind of edge, but still looks fun and funky which helps to create the light hearted feel good mood,  which pop songs intend to get across.

From this research of identifying stereotypical outfits, hairstyles and make-up ideas used in pop music videos, has made Maddie and myself more aware of what to include and what not to include. But to some extent we won’t be able to control completely the outfits, hairstyles and make-up choices used in our music video. As one of our main concepts is that we want the individuals used in our music video own styles to come through. This wouldn’t be possible if we determine what each of them wore on the day of filming. As Maddie and I believe our personalities and true identity is best described by the way we perceive ourselves to the outside world, which is best shown by the way we style ourselves. By us not having a set styling code which people need to follow allows us to project the lyrics and style of the song throughout the music video.
